Timber Series
The “Timber Series” of watercolor paintings are inspired by Kaufmann’s passion in the construction technique of “Mass Timber”, which is a way to build structures with smaller faster growing wood pieces that are compressed together to compose beams, columns, floors, walls and roofs in a way that dramatically reduces carbon emissions for no more cost than traditional buildings.
Delving into the grain of time, these watercolor paintings explore the layered narratives held within the rings of felled timber. Each fragment tells a story of decades: sun-drenched summers, drought-stricken years, all etched in the silent language of growth. But these stories are not ending; they are evolving. Captured in delicate washes of pigment, these sections of timber are ready to transcend their origins. They stand on the threshold of becoming architectural elements, describing history while forming the framework of tomorrow's spaces. Each of these paintings are a meditation on time's cyclical nature, where the past informs the present, and the present shapes the future.
